The Label
DataObscura was originally created by APK (Canada) as a CDr sister label to the Databloem label started back in 2002 with Dennis Knopper (Netherlands). They existed side by side until the beginning of 2008, when each went their separate ways.
Downloads were moved over to Bandcamp in 2014. In 2015 the Fictions and Poetics site was added to Bandcamp.
The label is based in Ontario, Canada. We handcraft CDr versions of many of our releases.
The Music
We release what could be called thoughtful contemporary electro-ambient and related music. This varies from minimal drone and fascinating noise-based works, up to the melodic and mildly rhythmic. We don't release dance music, or excessively darker or industrial forms of ambient. We do, however, like to stretch boundaries ... and we do release some very serious, quality music that rewards multiple listening! Quality is what we are about.
The Who
The driving force behind DataObscura is Anthony Paul Kerby (APK), who also composes highly acclaimed music under the names of The Circular Ruins, Nunc Stans, Fictions and Poetics, and Lammergeyer. He does most of the graphic work and the mastering of the releases.
Anthony was born in Ashingdon, Essex, England back in the mists of time, and somehow managed to end up in Ontario, Canada. His grew up playing classical guitar ... classically and in a folk vein. He now loves keyboards and synths, as should be clear.
